Commonwealth Railways
1962
The first 'unit' in the Commonwealth system was from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie known as the 'Trans Australian Rail', linking East to West opening on 24 Oct 1917. Subsequent lines from Port Augusta to Alice Springs, Darwin to Birdum & Canberra to Queanbeyan were added to the Commonwealth network.
